Pepi’s Hairdressers in Camden is the place to get any crazy hair creation. The owner, Carlos Gomez famously made Cher’s hairpiece using synthetic plastic extensions in her comeback single ‘Believe’ in 1998. Since then, their shop in the heart of Camden Market, is always thriving with new customers and new and imaginative hair ideas. From brightly coloured wigs, feathers, plastic wires, and hair extensions (synthetic and human) to a simple but stylish bob, Pepi’s can design whatever your heart desires. Do you have an eccentric hair wish that no one has granted?
The unconventional hair salon has many regulars; some want dreads, extensions or a simple cut and blowdry. Every colour shape and texture is available. Their updated and variable playlist of trance, dance, rock and acoustic music keeps any customer occupied as they can often sit for up for five hours whilst their hair is being transformed. A regular customer, Maya Torok, 28, says, “I come here every few months for a colour and a different style. They always have their own vision and are very creative. I always know they will make my hair look great – whether they dye it red, blue, green or purple. I have pretty much had every colour, and I do like their extensions. They are professional and very nice people. I feel comfortable here, it’s quite expensive, but I always believe that quality is very important.” Carlos explains, “Dreads take the longest time. We often work in pairs, especially if we are doing extensions.”
Pepi’s has been running for 18 years. Carlos Gomez, from Barcelona, first came up with the idea of plastic extensions by using electrical wiring. He has 25 years of experience, and his idea took off. Plastic extensions were purposely being developed for the shop, and for hair. Pepi’s have also made many magazine appearances including Vanity Fair, Vogue, Elle, Italian Vogue and Hello. Carlos continues,
“You get such a selection of people coming here, but we welcome everyone. We are a creative team, and have a lot of regulars.” The cosy hairdressers not only has an extensive selection of hairstyles, but it has a creative and unique décor. The friendly and funky staff all have a different style, and are multicultural. It’s full of diversity.
“We have moved several times within the market. We used to have a big space which was really nice – there was plenty of room. For many years we also had a clothes shop attached onto our hair salon, which was called Vicious, but unfortunately it had to close down, rent became so high it was hard for them to survive. Their shop moved to Barcelona.” says Carlos, his turquoise hair styled to perfection, his two friendly dogs LoLo and Lady at his feet seeking attention.
Pepi’s is open every day, except Mondays, until eight at night. They take their time, but are quick at what they do best. They offer coffee, bring in cakes and if you’re lucky, pizza, and never neglect to offer you a slice. If you’ve been their once, you get addicted. It’s as if you have been there for years and are part of the family. You get away from reality in a psychedelic, eye opening experience. It’s one of a kind.
