A man from St Mungo’s Hostel in Trafalgar Square smashed a TV because  he couldn’t find the remote, Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court has heard.

Joseph Smith, 47, of no fixed abode, was in custody for 24 hours for damaging private property on April 2nd at 10:40pm. He pleaded guilty.

According to the prosecution Mr. Smith ‘started to pull the TV of the wall as he could not find the remote, so he decided to punch the screen with his right hand.’5837398755_669d0cf2b6_b

The defence said he lost his temper because he is paying £20 per week to live there, so there should be a remote in the hostel.

The court heard that the man, who suffers from bipolar disorder, was under the influence of alcohol after drinking two bottles of wine.

Smith was ordered to pay £200 compensation, which will be taken out of his benefits at the rate of £10 per fortnight.

The hostel confirmed that he can return to the hostel and pay the compensation.
