untitledHigh street clothing giant, River Island, has certainly come a long way since its first store opened in the 1940s – however, the increasingly popular fashion brand decided to go back to its roots, by releasing a line of menswear named after the street where it all began; Holloway Road.

The Holloway Road Collection was launched in September 2012 and has proven to be a hit with buyers ever since. The rough and   ready style sees tailored garments mixed in with a bit of the on-trend wear and tear faded look. Long before the chain found global success, it consisted of just one store on Holloway Road, in Islington. Set up by Bernard Lewis and his brothers in 1948, some say that River Island may owe its success to its North London roots.

The heritage collection seems inspired by a vintage 40’s backdrop, set with a modern twist. With lots of brown, cream and tones of dark blues and greys, it’s easy to see how the brand has channeled some of the original River Island look back into the Holloway Road range. Featuring classic flat caps, gilets, checked prints as well as collared denim and suede jackets, this new collection truly represents the more classic days of Bernard Lewis’ original creation.

In a statement released by River Island Online, the true inspiration behind the range was revealed.

Drawing from the Lewis family’s strong fashion heritage and tradition of well made, quality garments, Bernard’s son and River Island Menswear Buyer, Sam, developed a range of hard working clothes for the modern man”.

Lucy Best, 21, works in a River Island store in London and didn’t realise the brand had originated so close to home.

She said: “I always travel through Holloway Road and had no idea that this is where the first store was set up.” Lucy added “The menswear in store is always quite sleek and modern so it’s cool it see a bit of a change up with this vintage-looking collection.”

The Holloway Road collection joins River Island’s other menswear ranges including ‘Life of Tailor’ for those of you who want to get suited-and-booted, and ‘Made In Britain’, the brand’s male accessory line.

The global fashion chain now has over 250 stores in the UK and is continuing to grow in size and popularity. With prices starting from £18 there’s no excuse not to be wearing this latest style from River Island.

The Holloway Road collection is now available to in stores and online at www.riverisland.com.
