Wigan Athletic took a huge step towards Premier League survival with a memorable 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night.
Relegation zone occupant Wigan came to the Emirates with nothing to lose and won it with two quick goals in a minute courtesy of a Franco Di Santo strike on the seventh minute and a Jordi Gomez’s effort from close range soon after.
It was a must win game for both sides. The teams needed the three desperate points to either secure a third place finish or a step closer to premier league survival.
Thomas Vermalaen managed to snatch a goal for Arsenal when he nodded home on the 21st minute, but Arsene Wenger’s team could not find the all-important equalizer despite throwing plenty of bodies forward. The Latics held on a superb victory.
Wigan’s shocking win brings an end to a nine consecutive away loss at the Arsenal home ground in their fight for Premier League survival, making it four wins in five as the Gunners rue several missed chances.
Mikel Arteta limped off in the opening moments with a serious ankle injury which added more woes to the already injury hit Arsenal team.
Arsene Wenger told reporters after the match: “He had to come off. It’s an ankle problem. It looks quite a serious one.”
